The hard earth seemed
To tear at my clothes as I tumbled over rocks until I came to rest on flat ground with thud. Wincing, I tried to regain my wits and wipe the loose mud from my face. I cleared the debris just in time to see a large boulder-like foot crashing down, narrowly missing my head as I rolled out of its path.
I sprung to feet and maneuvered myself behind the beast. There wasn’t anything in sight I could grab as a weapon, and I didn’t know how to fight trolls anyway. How do you kill dirt and rock? Standing behind it, I realized how huge these creatures were. I was able to run between its legs, without ducking, and it clumsily turned about. A guttural roar filled my ears, as it swiped to hit me. My only option was to confuse it. I knew they were not very bright. I hoped to buy myself enough time for if to rescue me.
if! I screamed Help me! I frantically looked for if, and found him just as his tail ripped through his troll opponent! Mud exploded and rained everywhere! A disgusting clump landed atop my head and seeped into my left eye; it instantly began to sting. My knees buckled under me and I fell to the ground. The sound of a whip cracked through thestumponline the air next to my ear and pain tore through my back. Turning to my assailant, I saw a large root being wielded around ready to lash down at my head. I raised my forearm to protect my face. A strong gust of wind sent me tumbling backwards, and I collapsed to the ground in pain.
if’s silhouette flew over me; the ground trembled when he landed. The dirt beneath me continued to shake; I knew wasn’t because of if. More trolls were on their way. A sudden searing pain shot through my ankle, like a snare of barbed wire had wrapped around it. The ground split apart, like a giant crack, and, forcefully I was yanked into the earth. I was being dragged down through the soil layers. Roots and dirt slid past me so fast I couldn’t grab them to stop my decent. My fingernails felt as if they would pop off from the impacted dirt beneath them. The distinct growls of some unknown creature chattered excitedly below me.
if’s cries for me grew farther and farther away. I screamed out to him, but wasn’t sure he would know where to find me. Underground! I bellowed. The pain in my back and ankle were unbearable. Rock after rock was slamming into my body and I was slipping in and out of consciousness. A thunderous blow ripped through the dank earth and the light of the moon was visible again. if’s tail had appeared before me. I grabbed ahold, and, as he pulled me up, the creature’s claws ripped through my flesh.
Disoriented and in shock, my chest was heaving from breathing so heavily. Severe pain ripped through my back and ankle. I tried to stand but couldn’t. if didn’t speak, but leaned in very close. I felt the warmth of his breath on my face. It smelled of campfire and was extremely comforting. Something warm and fleshy circled my waist. I grabbed ahold and was hoisted up into the air. if had wrapped his tongue around me and I was sitting in his jaw. I threw my arms around one of his large fangs and held on for dear life. He was running full speed back to camp.
